The Sad State of Affairs

How you have fallen you once beautiful bride

From Sea to Shining Sea you set the way for the world

The nations came to your shores to behold your beauty

Peoples from afar to hear your songs in the night

To behold your lengths and breaths and heights

Your towers touched the skies and did not fall

No nation was your equal nor challenged your place

For you stood tall and were strong to overcome

You opened your arms to the poor and needy

Your schools were far above the rest of the world

You boasted for you were supreme in your might

You had your place from God while you feared Him

But look at you in your excess and in your pride

Are you about to fall, can you stand against the blows

The tempest is blowing from afar, are you vigilant

Your enemies are strong and full of arrogant pride

Your neighbors pour over your gates to eat of your fruit

They send their young to pick your abundant harvest

You rejoiced in the best and the cheapest of everything

Until you became obese in excess in your lusts for more

You sent your work afar so you could get the best for less

You left your morals at the door as you entered the house

You played the flute for all your lovers as they approached

And charmed their pants off so you could hold them by their's

And now you cry because you can’t even afford their cheap wears

Your well of wealth is dried and has left your nest for theirs

Your savings have disappeared in the night you know not where

You stored your riches in the securest places not wanting to lose

You always seemed to escape disaster that nipped at your toes

And you sat high above the poverty line until you broke the bank

You printed new money by the loads to fill the economic gaps

To pay the bills with money watered down too far to keep its worth

And now you pray to the God who set you up above all the rest

But His word you did not keep as you established your own

But HE who sits on high cannot be moved from His ruling place

For He is over every nation in all the world bar none, bar none

Will your recover from your sore, will you return to Him alone

Or will you seek your lovers for another hand out to fill the gap

If you would look to Him He would show you the way out

Out of the hole you dug for yourself looking for more gold!
